How to Wash & Care for Your Turban the Right Way
Most people are washing their turbans too often and in the wrong way. Here's the complete guide to keeping your dastar fresh, vibrant, and long-lasting.
How Often Should You Actually Wash Your Turban?
This is the most important question — and the answer surprises most people. You do not need to wash your turban after every wear. In fact, washing it too frequently is one of the biggest reasons turbans lose their colour, shape, and softness faster than they should.
Think of it this way: when you wear a turban to the office or a family gathering, your head is not producing excessive sweat and the fabric is not picking up dust. After wearing it, simply unfold your turban and spread it flat on your bed or a clean surface to air out overnight. That is all it needs.

Even in summers, sweating from the head does not mean your turban is dirty. Simply spreading it out flat after wearing lets moisture evaporate naturally. Excessive washing breaks down the fine cotton fibres in voile fabric much faster than normal wear does.
The Best Way to Wash Your Turban
When the time does come to wash, the method matters. Here is the step-by-step process we recommend for Full Voile and Rubia Voile turbans.
Use slightly cool or lukewarm water — never hot. Hot water causes the cotton fibres to contract and can cause colours to bleed or fade. Slightly cool water is ideal for preserving colour and fabric structure.
Fill a large basin or bucket with water, add a small amount of mild detergent, and gently work the turban through the water with your hands. Do not scrub, twist, or wring aggressively. Gentle squeezing is enough to clean the fabric properly.
If you use a washing machine, always select the Delicate or Gentle cycle. Wash the turban separately — not with other clothing — and use only a minimal amount of detergent. A mesh laundry bag is a good idea to prevent tangling.
Harsh detergents, bleach-based products, or strong stain removers will damage the fine weave of voile fabric and strip the colour. Use a gentle liquid detergent. Less is more — a small amount is sufficient.
Make sure all detergent is rinsed out completely. Detergent residue left in the fabric can make it feel stiff and rough once dry, and can also dull the colour over time.
How to Dry Your Turban Properly
Hang or lay your turban in any well-ventilated area — but keep it out of direct sunlight. UV rays cause colours to fade significantly faster.
Never twist or wring the turban to remove water. Gently press out excess water by folding it and applying soft pressure.
Either hang it to drip dry or lay it flat on a clean surface. Both work well for voile fabric.
The high heat and tumbling motion of a dryer can shrink and damage voile fabric. Always air dry.
Do You Need to Iron Your Turban?
Generally speaking — no, you do not need to iron your turban. A good quality voile turban, when dried properly, will naturally fall smoothly when tied. Most of our customers do not iron at all.
However, if you do prefer a crisper finish, here is how to do it safely:
Ironing Guidelines
- Always use the lowest heat setting on your iron.
- Iron while the fabric is still slightly damp — this makes it easier and requires less heat.
- Use a pressing cloth (a thin cotton cloth placed between the iron and the turban) to protect the fabric.
- Never iron on high heat — voile is a delicate weave and high heat can leave permanent marks or cause the fabric to become brittle.
- For Mal Mal F74 turbans, be especially careful — this fabric is even more delicate.
How to Store Your Turban
Proper storage extends the life of your turban significantly. After wearing or after drying, fold your turban neatly and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid leaving it in a compressed pile under other clothing for extended periods as this can cause permanent creasing.
